Women Workers Empowerment Program

The project aimed at highlighting the issues of the women workers in textile industry, organizing the women workers, sensitizing the civil society, media and other stake holders on the issues of the women workers, adoption of the Code of Conduct and establishment of the Telephone Help Line for the women workers. Keeping these aims in view the following activities were carried out.
1. 324 women workers have been organized into 13 groups. These groups meet regularly and are very vocal on all the issues of the women workers. These groups are comprised of women workers from Faisalabad and the adjacent areas. The groups have formal structure and have their own local leadership for negotiation. The groups have been made on the unit level.
2. An integrated research has been conducted on the issues and condition of the women workers in Textile Industry. Total 450 women, 100 male workers and 50 owners and high management were interviewed. The report has been complied and produced. The aim of the research study is to highlight the issues and condition of the women workers. This is the first ever study in last twenty-five years.
3. The Committee formed for the Adoption of the Code of Conduct against Sexual Harassment. This committee is comprised of lawyers, media persons, human rights activists, labor leaders and women workers. The total number of Committee members is 12. The Committee works for the Adoption of the Code of Conduct by the factory/unit owners. 26 Units/factories and institutions have adopted the Code.
4. Women Workers’ Help Line has been established. A poster containing the information of the Help Line is published and has been pasted outside the 500 factories/units, institutions and departments. From January 2008 to December 2009 the Help Line has taken up the 23 cases of sexual harassment, discrimination and economic injustice. 14 cases have been decided in favor of the women and 9 are pending.
